Shigetoshi Kotari, only 28 years old, collapsed after a grueling 12-round match against Yamato Hata for the OPBF Super Featherweight title in Tokyo. The fight ended in a draw, but Kotari suffered an acute subdural hematoma, a serious brain injury caused by head trauma.

According to the Japan Boxing Commission, Kotari was rushed to a Tokyo hospital immediately after losing consciousness. He underwent emergency surgery, but despite medical efforts, his condition did not improve. Six days later, the Shigetoshi Kotari death left the boxing world in shock.

Japan Boxing Commission confirmed he underwent an emergency craniotomy following his collapse in the ring.

Just one day before the fight, Kotari posted a smiling photo alongside his opponent on Instagram, writing in Japanese, “Finally the time has come… I will definitely be a champion.” Those words have since been shared widely as a symbol of his unwavering determination.

With a professional record of eight wins, two draws, and two losses, Kotari was widely respected for his relentless style. Fans and fellow athletes from across the globe have paid tribute, remembering him not only as a skilled fighter but also as a man of courage and spirit.
